Song Sang-do (1871-1947), upon experiencing the national humiliation of 1910 (Gyeongsul Gukchi), took the pen name “Giryeoja” (騎驢子) and resolved to compile the records of patriotic figures from Korea’s eight provinces.
Beginning in 1910 and continuing for 35 years until the liberation on August 15, 1945, he traveled on foot throughout the country, visiting the descendants and relatives of these patriots to investigate and document their deeds. He collected materials such as newspapers and magazines from the time of the events, and after liberation, on December 26, 1946, he completed five volumes of “Giryeosupil” (騎驢隨筆). Song Sang-do traveled in search of traces of independence activists and left records of them.
His work greatly inspired Attorney Koo Bon-jin’s collection.
