Scarab Beetle

Oct 6 2024

This sculpture, resembling an insect, is crafted from mossy green jade, though its color has altered over time, showing signs of whitening. The head is rounded with prominent, bulging eyes, while markings along the body suggest the presence of wings. The upper body is distinctly arched, forming a convex, dome-like shape, and the base is flat. Notably, the sculpture lacks detailed features such as legs and antennae, making it challenging to accurately identify the creature it represents. Despite these ambiguities, it bears a resemblance to a beetle. However, no similar sculptures have been discovered to date, making this specimen truly unique.

This piece evokes comparison to the Egyptian scarab, one of the most revered and iconic amulets of Ancient Egypt. The scarab symbolized creation and eternal life, and it was believed to offer powerful protection against evil. In Ancient Egypt, millions of scarab amulets were produced, carved from stone, molded from glass, or crafted from Egyptian faience. These amulets served various purposes, including being worn as beads, used as seals, or for other symbolic uses.
