Lyuh Woon-hyung, “A Humble Tribute to Master Su-san on His 60th Birthday Celebration”

Jul 26 2024

Lyuh Woon-hyung (1886–1947)** was a prominent Korean independence activist, politician, and journalist. Known by his pen name “Mongyang,” he played a key role in Korea’s struggle for independence from Japanese rule. He was a key figure in the March 1st Movement and was involved in various nationalist efforts, including founding the Shinhan Youth Party and actively participating in the Provisional Government of Korea.

During the Japanese colonial period, he engaged in diverse activities, including founding the “Hwangseong Newspaper,” establishing educational institutions, and contributing to the Korean independence movement through journalism and political leadership. In 1944, he formed the Korean Independence League, which later expanded into the Korean People’s Republic after Japan’s defeat in World War II.

Lyuh advocated for a unified Korea without foreign intervention, calling for collaboration between right- and left-wing factions. However, his moderate stance led to tensions with both sides. His political career ended abruptly when he was assassinated in 1947, likely by a far-right extremist, during the turbulent post-liberation period. Lyuh’s efforts for Korean unity and his influence on the independence movement remain significant in Korea’s modern history.

Translation:

A Humble Tribute to Master Su-san on His 60th Birthday Celebration

Born into a blessed family, today marks the year of your birth,
On this special day, I bow in respect, celebrating your honorable age.
The bonds of fate that have kept you close, half a lifetime shared,
Are fully realized in the peaceful plans to retreat to nature’s embrace.
The songs in the grand hall have reached their peak, as relatives rejoice,
In the courtyard, rising to dance, your descendants show their virtue.
I long to remain nearby, to share the deep affections of this world,
As I write this tribute, the picture forms a perfect circle.

— With utmost respect, Your disciple Lyuh Woon-hyung, humbly bows
