Holed Annulus

Aug 1 2024

This sculpture is a holed annulus made of moss green, transparent jade. The wall of the hole is trimmed straight, and the surface is slightly raised at the center. The inner hole is shallower than the v-shaped trace found along its inside edge. A common feature of Hongshan Culture jade artifacts is the “thin blade” technique, evident in this piece. The ratio of the inner circle to the total body of the annulus varies among artifacts, and in this case, the circle is relatively small compared to the overall body. Comparable examples are housed in the Aurora Art Museum.
