C-shaped Bear

Jun 5 2024

A sculpture with a thick, coiled body, its head framed by large, encircling earflaps, evokes mythical associations.

The robust, coiled body suggests a possible depiction of a dragon, while the head hints at a bear-like figure. The jade, a dark green hue with brown accents, adds to its enigmatic presence. The tail connects to the head on the inner surface, while the large head is characterized by ovoid earflaps framing circular eye sockets and a simplified channel forming the snout.

The softly contoured shapes and highly polished surfaces, exuding a sense of fluidity, are quintessential of the Hongshan aesthetic. Similar pieces can be found in the Aurora Art Museum.
