This sculpture features a legendary dragon intricately carved in a striking “C” shape. Crafted from dark green jade, the piece is marked by distinctive white and green splotches. The jade material is remarkably durable, producing a metallic ring when struck, akin to iron. The dragon’s design, with its elongated snout and flowing tuft extensions, is particularly notable. Its form closely resembles the renowned “First Dragon of China” in both shape and color.
Excavated in 1971 from Ongniud Banner in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the “First Dragon of China” (Height: 26.3 cm, Width: 29.3 cm, Weight: 1000 g) stands as one of the earliest and most magnificent jade carvings ever discovered. It is celebrated as one of the top 10 masterpieces displayed at the National Museum of China, highlighting its exceptional artistry and cultural significance.
