Aug 2 2024

The small-scale sculpture depicts a horned owl, a bird of prey. The jade is a mossy green color with areas of whitening. Notable features include two faint, circular eyes on the protruding head, along with a visible beak. Two carved grooves represent the left and right wing chords, while three grooves delineate the tail feathers. The head appears to have an upright ear, the chest is slightly elevated, and the abdomen is embossed. The round feet are folded. A perforation runs through the back of the jade bird. A similar artifact was unearthed from Tomb No. 1 at the Hutou Ditch cemetery in Fuxin County, Liaoning Province.
