Bill Gates’s Handwriting: Reading the Future and Turning It into Reality
In late 1974, Bill Gates and Paul Allen saw a photograph of a computer in a magazine. It was the Altair 8800. Neither of them had ever seen the machine in person, and they did not even possess the Intel 8080 processor on which it was based. Nevertheless, they contacted the manufacturer and offered to provide a version of BASIC that would run on the Altair.
There was one problem: the program did not yet exist.
They secured the opportunity first and then began building the software. Paul Allen developed an emulator on a Harvard mainframe that could simulate the Altair’s Intel 8080 environment, while Gates used it to write the core of the BASIC interpreter. Harvard student Monte Davidoff also contributed by implementing floating-point arithmetic.
As Allen was flying to Albuquerque for the demonstration, he suddenly realised that they had forgotten the bootstrap loader needed to enter the program into the Altair. He hurriedly wrote it on the plane.
The BASIC program, which had never actually been run on a real Altair, worked during its first demonstration.
How was such a decision possible?
One way of approaching that question is through Bill Gates’s handwriting.

A strong sense of reality does not mean being correct from the beginning in every case. It also means being able to modify an earlier judgment when new evidence becomes compelling.
