A Pair of Phoenix

Aug 29 2024

This pair of dragon sculptures includes both a male and a female, making it the only known Hongshan culture artifact featuring both genders together. In Chinese mythology, the male phoenix is called *Feng* (鳳) and the female is called *Huang* (凰). According to legend, the phoenix was said to be born from a dragon that mated with a crane in the clouds, which is reflected in the form of the male phoenix. Unusually, the decorative pattern of arrows appears only on the female dragon. This is similar to other artifacts where female figures alone feature such patterns, highlighting a consistent symbolic tradition.
